TAT Update: Tsunami Alert on Thailand’s Andaman Sea Coast Cancelled

Tourists who were planning to visit the Andaman Sea coastal provinces during the Songkran Festival will find that conditions in the area remain normal. Songkran celebrations elsewhere throughout Thailand were not affected and will take place as scheduled.

The police have tightened security in Hat Yai and the surrounding area. Hat Yai International Airport, and train and bus services are operating as per normal, but with heightened security.

The TAT is working closely with the administrations of Songkhla Province and Yala Province, as well as Tourist Police and tourism associations, to monitor the situation and provide assistance to tourists and tourism businesses affected by the incident. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports, through the TAT Hat Yai Office, has also provided financial assistance and compensation to travellers affected by the incident.

On Saturday, 31 March 2012, there was an explosion and fire at the Lee Gardens Plaza Hotel in Hat Yai, Songkhla province. According to the Royal Thai Police, the explosion and fire was due to the detonation of an explosive device in a vehicle in the car park located under the building.
